An Orthodontist is a specialist dentist with additional training and knowledge in the speciality of orthodontics. An Orthodontist first trains to become a dentist and usually practices general dentistry for several years. This is then followed by three more years of university training purely in the specialty of orthodontics. While an Orthodontist is registered as both a dentist and specialist orthodontist, Orthodontists only practices orthodontics. Orthodontists therefore has the knowledge and experience to be the most qualified to help you with issues related to the alignment of the teeth and bite.

Orthodontics Australia recommend children first see an Orthodontist between the age of 7 to 10 years old. At Camberwell Orthodontics we welcome patients of all ages from young children, teens and adults of all ages.

The overall length of treatment usually depends on the complexity of your case, and what treatment options you and your Orthodontist have decided to achieve. Most treatment time takes between 12-24 months. Limited treatments and minor cases, including early treatment in younger children may only take 6 months. It is important to remember that most treatments will require retention afterwards.

Some private health providers do cover orthodontic treatment, depending on your individual policy. We can provide item numbers to facilitate your claims. Please contact your health insurance provider to find out if you have coverage.

Yes, you are required to maintain regular visits with your dentist during orthodontic treatment. This ensures your teeth and gums remain healthy throughout treatment. 

The frequency of visits depends on your treatment plan. Most patients attend the practice every 6 to 10 weeks for routine adjustments and checks. Once you commence treatment, we will always make sure your next appointment pre-booked in advance.   

Braces and clear aligners generally have minimal impact on day-to-day life. There may be a short period of adjustment initially, and the majority of your treatment should be trouble free. However, it is important to remember to take additional care during eating and cleaning your teeth and braces.

Before you begin your orthodontic treatment, it is recommended you see your dentist for a routine check-up. It is important that your teeth and gums are healthy before starting orthodontic treatment. Your orthodontist will help and guide you if you require dental treatment before or after orthodontic treatment.
